3 Ways to Combat Anxiety | Tuesdays With Thomas

January 22, 2021

I want to encourage you to use this slow winter season in photography to focus on personal growth and dive deep into education to better yourself for the upcoming busy seasons in 2021! I know there is a lot of uncertainty of what this year will hold, especially considering the craziness of Covid-19, the political changes, and dealing with your kids being at home instead of being at school. Because of these factors, I want to talk about “3 Ways to Combat Anxiety In Your Life”.

The First Step to Combat Anxiety

The first step to combat stress/anxiety in your life is to identify the “stressor, the fear, or insecurity” that is causing your current state of anxiety. Many times, you can be triggered by an event that happened when you were a child, young adult, or parent that puts you into a crippling anxiety cycle. Things happen to us throughout our life that can reappear at any time and immediately makes us anxious and puts fear in our heart. Anxiety can stop you in your tracks and make you doubt yourself, take a step back from your life goals, and play small. In order to overcome that state, you must figure out what’s the cause and why this trigger is overtaking your thoughts and actions.

The Second Step

The second step to combat anxiety is to identify the ‘magnificent’ things that are currently in your life. Despite all the crappy things that may creep into your life, the positive things far outweigh the negative. For one, you’re alive today! We aren’t guaranteed tomorrow, but you’re here today! Think of the amazing blessings in your life: your relationship with Jesus, your beautiful spouse and children, your home, your health, your business….the list can literally go on! So many times we focus on the small things that have no impact on our lives rather than focusing on the amazing things we’ve blessed with. I want to encourage you today to take time to literally write down all the wonderful things in your life and remind yourself how blessed you really are!

The Third Step

The third step to combat anxiety is to picture yourself one year from now with your perfect life. Imagine if everything you want to achieve in 2021 comes true. That may look different for each of you. You may want to quit your 9-5, make more money with photography than your current job, scale your business with more clients, have more time for your spouse and children, go on more vacations, pay down some debt, or simply be worry free. Focusing on your goals will allow you to combat the fears and anxiety in your life. I want to encourage you to take time today to write down what your perfect year looks like and focus your time and energy on that!

Here’s a great scripture to refer to when anxiety and worry begin to creep in your life:

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
