How To Serve Your Audience with Free Content

November 21, 2022

In this video, I’m gonna share with you why you need to offer free products in your business and the glory that is your email list. Before we dive in, make sure to take advantage of the free resources and downloads below.

1. What’s the Point?

When I first started my business, I had a business coach that once told me, “you really should start your email list.” And I was like, “Well, I don’t see the point of that because I hate emails and I don’t want to send emails because it seems boring and terrible.” She said to me, “Ok, Brittany that’s all well and good, but what happens if Mark Zuckerberg decides to pull the plug on Facebook?” What if he decides that he;’s going to take his money and run, and pulls the plug on Facebook and Instagram and there’s nothing left? How would you sell your services and products?

When she said that, I definitely realized the importance of having an email list. It was a very great thing and terrible thing to think about all the same time. And so I took her advice and I started offering free ebooks, free welcome guides, free engagement session guides, 25% off purchases, and more. I started offering incentives for people to give me their email list. And what I noticed is that people gladly gave me their email address for something beneficial to them.

2. The Platform I Use

The platform I use is called Flodesk. It was brand new at the time and what I realized is that over time, with me offering these free things to them, my email list started to grow. It grew from 0-1,000 within a couple of months. And for me that was a REALLY big deal! Because when I sent my first email sharing that I now had a photography course that was a $200 course, and I just sent the email and clicked send, I actually started to make money. I made $10,000 in a day because I offered my email list a free photography ebook for the last few months. Crazy right?

So, if you don’t have an email list yet, and you have thoughts like I did, I want to both encourage and challenge you. Nobody sees how many email subscribers you have like they do with Instagram followers or other vanity metrics. Nobody knows that except you. Focusing too much on Instagram growth and vanity metrics and not your email list because nobody knows how many subscribers you have. People focus more on the vanity that doesn’t actually produce them money. They’re more concerned about hitting the 10k on their Instagram instead of 10k in their bank account.

And that’s the problem. The 10k on your Instagram does NOT pay the bills. What I hope you glean from this video is seeing the WHY behind an email list and how important it is to have one. Maybe you don’t know where to begin with how to get one though.

3. Simple Problem-Solving for Clients

First, I’m going to explain a simple concept. Your client, before they give you any money, need to get something for free. In a previous video about what kind of products you need, I talk about the need to think creatively. Think about something that you can offer your clients and your customers for free. This is something that’s not going to cost you a lot of money, especially something free, doesn’t need to cost you any money and doesn’t need to much time. I suggest you solve a problem for your clients and customers that you can quickly make into a guide, checklist, or tutorial that will provide value to them that’s free.

After creating your free resource, go into Canva.com and create your digital product of the free guide, checklist, style guide. (There is a previous video covering Canva as well!) Think of something that’s valuable, and put it in a free PDF. This is now your free content.

It’s that simple.

It didn’t cost you any money because Canva is free! It’ll cost you maybe a couple of hours to put it together. So not a lot of time. Once you finish your product, save the PDF to your desktop and jump into Flodesk. Get your email list started!

4. Making the Most of Flodesk

The rest of what you’re going to do will be in Flodesk (which I show on my computer screen in the video above.) I’m going to show you how to create segments and group people based on what you’re offering. I’ll also show you how to create a form to collect email addresses in Flodesk. This can be in the form of a pop-up or a form embedded on your website.

I’m going to teach you how to make an email that will attach the free content to your form that’s connected to the segment. When somebody types their email address in, Flodesk grabs their email and it sends them the email with your free content inside. You can create workflows in Flodesk, too! Workflows are automated email sequences that you schedule to deliver the free product or free content in an email.

From here, you can schedule additional emails that your new subscriber will receive with another offer or the invite to shop for different products. You’re giving them a free product that might lead them to purchase additional products that aren’t super expensive for them. Then your low ticket product leads to your midpoint product and then the high point and hopefully the purchase of your luxury product.

Flodesk is one of the BEST tools that I use in my business and it’s very affordable. Make sure you watch the full tutorial in the video above. If you haven’t joined yet, I’d love to have you jump into the free Facebook group for business coaching. Also, let me know one of your best takeaways from this video. Do you have a free product already? Have you started to build your email list? Let me know in the comments!
