When I was first trying to figure out my camera on my own, I felt SO. freakin. defeated. I was seeing all these images from photographers I was following on Instagram, and they all had SUPER sharp subjects, with the. most. dreamy. creamy. blurry backgrounds! And I was like HOWWW are they doing this? Am I an idiot? Does my camera suck? Maybe a little of both? And it was, honestly, at the time, a little of both. I had no clue what I was doing. I invested $0 into educating myself. I thought SURELY I could figure this out with free youtube videos, right? Isn’t that how you learn these days?!
I learned extremely quickly that no, Martha, that’s not how this works. At the time, I had a Nikon D3100 and the kit lens that came with the camera which was an 18-55mm 3.5-5.6. The camera was fine, but the lens totally sucked. There really is no other way to put it. Its a great lens if you shoot in Auto and have no clue what you’re doing. But when you decide you want MORE from your images and you want professional looking pictures like the ones you see on Instagram… then its time for an upgrade.
Nikon 50mm f/1.8
I did a TON of research before I spent the money on this lens. And let me tell you, the reviews were AMAZING and the lens did not disappoint. Its a lens that produces sharp images, great color, with an aperture that goes all the way down to 1.8 so that you can produce those creamy, dreamy backgrounds!! (don’t know what aperture is?
